West Suburban Political Player Charged with Tax Fraud
The Sun-Times reports that Anthony Bruno - a disbarred attorney who has consulted for a number of suburban Cook County municipalities - has been charged with tax fraud.
Here’s more from that Sun-Times report:
Bruno has consulted for suburbs including Cicero, Bellwood, Forest Park and Melrose Park, earning more than $1.25 million in fees between 1998 and 2005, records show.
As you can see here and here and here, Bruno and his business enterprises are also generous campaign contributors to many of suburban elected officials for whom they consult - both Republican and Democrat.
What effect might this have on upcoming elections?
Well, Bruno’s company also is a minor contributor to The New Students First Party, which is the political party of current Proviso School District 209 Board President Chris Welch. As we mentioned previously, the race for District 209 is going to be a hot one this spring.
And Bruno’s firm made headlines back in 2003 when District 209 hired his firm to help locate a site for a proposed magnet school. According to this story, 209 Board Member Robert Smith raised some concerns when that payment was made to Bruno’s firm back in 2003.
Will these charges have any repercussions for the many local elected officials who have either hired or received contributions from Bruno? Remains to be seen …

Anthony Bruno will certainly bring down Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico, Forest Park Mayor Anthony Calderone, Bellwood Mayor Frank Pasquale and Proviso School District 209 President Chris Welch. Justice never sleeps and neither does Patrick Fitzgerald.
